Better Control, Better Results: The Power of Using Less Paste

Using a huge ball of paste may look impressive, but in reality, it makes controlling your technique much harder. The larger the paste ball, the more difficult it becomes to maintain precision and properly hold the skin taut, especially in delicate areas like the face, underarm or labia.
In my 20 years of teaching Sugaring, I've seen people apply far more paste then necessary for the area. Applying sugar paste over a large area may seem efficient, but it often leads to improper hair removal. One major issue is that you might not be molding the paste against the natural direction of hair. Applying too much paste also makes it difficult to properly support the tissue when removing such a large section in one go. This approach not only reduces control but also increases discomfort for the client. This technique can increase the risk of:
❌ Breaking hairs instead of removing them from the root
❌ Leaving behind stubborn hairs that require multiple passes
❌ Skin irritation and inflammation from excessive rework

I’ve seen Sugarists struggle with this—spending extra time going over the same area repeatedly, which not only slows them down but also increases discomfort for the client.
By working in smaller sections and following the natural growth pattern, you:
✔ Ensure a clean removal with fewer passes
✔ Reduce skin irritation and over-exfoliation
✔ Provide a more comfortable and efficient service
Although Sugaring is about technique, not speed, and precision always leads to better results, I find it can be faster to work in smaller areas because I don't have to go over the skin several times to remove the hairs that grow in different directions. So, I start with a small ball of paste and add if necessary.
